On 9 September 1947, operators at Harvard taped a moth into the logbook of the Mark II with the note: “First actual case of bug being found.” The word was already decades old; the moth gave the industry its founding myth. “Debugging” became the discipline. Issue trackers, bug-bounty programmes, and QA tooling became industries in their own right.
The real bugs, meanwhile, are experiencing the largest phylum-scale decline in the biological record — an estimated 40% collapse in global insect biomass within living memory. A software industry built on the elimination of “bugs” operates on physical infrastructure whose land-conversion, thermal, and chemical footprint contributes to the decline of the very moths its founders taped into a logbook.
