§  Reasoning of record

Redpanda Data was founded in 2019 by Alexander Gallego and has raised approximately $265 million, including a $100 million Series D led by GV in April 2025 that valued the company at $1 billion. The platform is a C++, Kafka-compatible streaming data engine marketed to enterprises for real-time and agentic-AI workloads. By engineering reputation it is a well-regarded product.

The company is named after the red panda, Ailurus fulgens. That name has been borrowed before: Mozilla chose “Firefox” in 2002 as a nickname for the red panda, then gradually replaced the animal with a fox in its branding. In both cases the animal’s symbolic appeal — small, quick, likeable, distinct — travels into technology while the animal itself receives no contractual protection from the brand.

The red panda is listed as Endangered by the IUCN. The 2015 assessment estimates a wild population of fewer than 10,000 mature individuals and a decline of possibly 50% over just 20 years. Principal threats are habitat loss and fragmentation from logging, livestock grazing, road construction, hydroelectric and power-line development, and climate-driven shifts in the bamboo forests on which the species depends. The animal is protected on paper in all five range countries; enforcement is uneven and much suitable habitat lies outside protected areas.

The base rate (Cloud / AI Compute, 2.0%) records the downstream compute and data-centre load the platform drives. The namesake surcharge (+0.5%) records the taking of the name — here, of a creature whose wild population is shrinking while the brand that borrows its identity grows. The figure does not name Redpanda Data a villain. It records the same structural mismatch the strand has traced before: nomenclatural displacement, in which the symbol absorbs affection that the referent does not receive in operational protection.

§  Calculation

BioDebt = £26,100,000 × (2.0 % + 0.5 % × 1) = £652,500 / yr
Revenue input is an estimated 2025 annual figure for Redpanda Data. NameCount = 1 (Red panda). Ailurus fulgens is IUCN-listed Endangered; the namesake surcharge is applied under the ledger’s liberal interpretation (welfare-grounds decline + structural habitat loss) per the methodology section’s precedent. The source estimate is USD; the ledger records an illustrative GBP-equivalent amount pending Folio II re-statement against audited filings.
